Self-Pour Taprooms 101: How the Tap Wall Works (and 7 Questions First-Timers Always Ask)

The first time most people walk up to our 24-tap wall, they pause. Tap handles, screens, little RFID readers — it looks a bit like a beer vending machine, and not in a bad way. Then someone asks the question we hear five times a day:

"Wait… how does this actually work?"

If you've ever stood in front of a self-pour wall and felt that flash of "am I about to embarrass myself," this one's for you. It's also for the curious: the friend who keeps hearing about self-pour taprooms popping up around the East Valley and wants to know what the fuss is about before driving over.

Here's the short version: a self-pour taproom lets you be the bartender. You pour exactly the amount you want, from whichever taps look interesting, at your own pace — and you only pay for the ounces you actually pour.

Since we opened in Queen Creek, our guests have poured over 285,000 ounces through the wall. So we've answered every version of every question. Below is the field guide we wish someone had handed us the first time, too.

How Switch Brews' 24-Tap Self-Pour Wall Works, Step by Step

We run our tap wall on iPourIt, the same self-pour technology used at hundreds of taprooms across the country. Here's the actual flow when you walk in:

  1. Check in at the bar. We'll grab a quick ID check, swipe a card to open a tab, and hand you a wristband with a small RFID tag built in. The card is held but never charged until you close out.

  2. Walk up to any tap. Each of our 24 taps has a small screen above it showing the beer's name, brewery, style, ABV, and price per ounce. Some show notes ("hazy, citrus-forward") so you know what you're getting into.

  3. Tap your wristband. The screen unlocks the tap for you. You'll see a live ounce counter start at zero.

  4. Pour what you want. Two ounces to try something new, six for a half-pint, sixteen for a full one. Tilt the glass, ease the handle, and the screen counts up in real time.

  5. Move on whenever you're ready. You can hit two taps or twelve. Sample three sours, then commit to the one you love. Nobody's keeping score except the system, which is exactly the point.

  6. Close out when you're done. Bring your wristband back to the bar. We'll print one tab showing every ounce of everything, total charge, and you're out the door.

That's it. There's no app to download, no minimum order, no awkward "I'll have a flight of four" moment. If you change your mind about something three sips in, just stop pouring and move on. We won't be offended.

7 Questions First-Timers Always Ask

1. Do I need a card or an app to get started?

Just a valid ID and a card to hold your tab. No app, no membership, no sign-up. We open the tab, you walk to the wall.

2. What if I pour too much, or it's a bad pour with too much foam?

Here's the trick: pour slowly with the glass tilted at about a 45° angle, and you'll get a clean pour every time. If you do end up with a glass of foam on your first try (it happens), come grab one of us — we're happy to help you tweak your technique and repour. Nobody's perfect on tap one.

3. Can I taste a beer before I commit to a full pour?

That's the whole point. You can pour as little as one or two ounces just to sample. Some of our regulars do a tasting flight on their own — three to five short pours across different styles, then a full glass of the winner. It's the way we wish every taproom worked.

4. I've never really had craft beer. What if I don't know what to order?

You're in the right place to figure it out. Start light — a lager, a kölsch, or a wheat. From there, work toward something a bit hoppier or fruitier. Each tap screen tells you the style and notes, and we've got a beginner's guide to the styles on our wall if you want to read before you visit. If you're stuck, ask the bar. We genuinely love helping new drinkers find their first favorite.

5. Is there a limit on how much I can pour?

Yes — for everyone's safety, your wristband is capped at a set number of ounces per visit (and the system tracks your pace, so it'll slow you down if you're moving too fast). If you hit the cap, we'll check in with you and re-authorize if you're good to keep going. It's how a responsible self-pour taproom is supposed to work.

6. Can I bring my kids? Is this actually family-friendly?

Yes — and we mean it. We're a coffee shop in the morning, a self-pour taproom by night, and somewhere in between for most of the day. Families come in for coffee and a snack, post up at a table, and the adults can wander to the tap wall while the kids stay put. We've leaned into this on purpose — it's why we exist. (More on that in our post on how the same space works for remote workers, parents, and date nights.)

7. What if I don't want beer? Coffee, wine, or non-alcoholic?

We've got you. We pull espresso all day on locally roasted beans. We pour wine. We keep non-alcoholic options on hand. The self-pour wall is one piece of what we do — it's not the only reason to come in.

Why Self-Pour Just Works Better

A traditional taproom asks you to commit to a pint of something you've never tried, with a bartender watching, in front of friends. A self-pour taproom asks: what do you actually feel like drinking right now?

If you like Hazy IPAs, you can compare three. If you've never had a Gose, pour two ounces and find out. If your friend keeps insisting you'll love a sour, you can prove them right (or beautifully wrong) for fifty cents instead of eight bucks.

That freedom is what's been driving the shift in how taprooms work across Arizona — and the reason over 285,000 ounces have gone over our bar since we opened the doors.
